One ring to bind them in the red portal

Oracle’s migration of Sun’s sites like developers.sun.com and java.sun.com it’s a big waste of time / resources. Thus, this Oracle guys are showing that they have a lot of red ink, they don’t like the blue color, and forget that an Oracle predicts the future not the present.

A review of some Java books

There are hundreds of books about Java these days, but each one focus different things about the language. So, for those who wants to know the Java features; Java 6 Platform Revealed (Zukowski) shows the interesting and useful characteristics of Java 6. It’s not a book to learn Java, it’s a book about some Java features like; XML, JDBC, I/O, Networking and so on.
For those who need to learn Java, the book of Poo, Kiong & Ashok (OOP And Java) illustrates (in about 300 pages) the basic constructs to develop Java programs. It covers inheritance, generics, modularity, exception handling and networking, moreover serialization and applets/servlets. It’s a good book to have at hand. Other good book it’s the Think in Java from Bruce Eckel, in this book Eckel shows (in no compact way) many features, examples and tips about the Java Programming matter. It covers RMI, CORBA, Java Beans, JNI and other technologies. It’s a very good book to have in your library. Lastly the book of Jacqui Barker (Java Objects) it’s the natural introduction to programming with Objects and Java. In this book she present (in about 800 pages) the process of modeling and implementing such concepts using Java code.

Specialized trails.
Networking, two book covers almost everything about this topic, Fundamental Networking with Java (E.Pitt) and Introduction Network Programming with Java (Jan Graba). The topics covered includes; RMI, CORBA, Servlets, Inet, TCP/UDP, Multiplexing, and so on. Both books offer an gentle introduction to the client/server paradigm and his implementation with Java code, moreover some advanced topics like serialization over networks and RMI are very interesting tools to have at hand.
Graphical Applications, The book Definitive Guide to Java Swing (Zukowski) shows almost everything about Swing, hence if the need is graphical this book is a must have. In contrast, Creating Mobile Games from Carol Hamer presents (in about 400 pages) the insight to build graphical applications, that is, games. She shows how to program with Java Mobile and to put such mobile app in a Cell-Phone.

Java version

There are many ways to get involved in the learning process of the Java Lang. The Java-tutorial from Sun/Oracle is a very useful resource for beginners. The Java Forums are an useful community also, and the certification process is the end of such cycle of learning. Now that Oracle has acquired Sun, and J. Gosling (Java father) get out of the company, many things will change. But in the near future we hope that Oracle will continue supporting Java fiercely. Now that Java’s golden age has gone, it’s the time of languages with more power, easyness and integration with natural human concepts. Right now i’m thinking about Ruby, a very interesting language that has potential to be integrated with intelligent tools and auto-programming. Python can become more prominent in the fore-coming years.

Java reign will not end early, we will still use it some decades from now on. But the golden age has gone, from now on, Java will become more integrated and aligned with the Oracle product-line. We have seen such integrations before, Microsoft and his Basic/C# are useful but fat and often behaves wrong, an uniform deployment is a headache and Microsoft develops more intricate versions every year.

Programmers are in a race with the Universe to create bigger and better idiot-proof programs, while the Universe is trying to create bigger and better idiots. So far the Universe is winning. (R. Cook)
